A set of oversized tires can make a rig look mean in the parking lot. On the trail, the wrong size can rub at full lock, kill gearing, chew up fenders, and turn a solid build into a headache. If you are figuring out how to size offroad tires, the goal is not just going bigger. The goal is picking a tire that fits your vehicle, matches how you drive, and works with the rest of the build.
A lot of people start with the number they want to brag about. Thirty-fives. Thirty-sevens. Forties. That is backwards. Tire sizing starts with your vehicle, your suspension, your wheel specs, and how much cutting or trimming you are willing to do. It also depends on whether your rig spends more time crawling over rocks, running dirt roads, or hauling gear to camp on the weekend.
How to Size Offroad Tires Without Guessing
The first thing to understand is that tire size affects more than clearance. Bigger tires change effective gearing, braking feel, steering response, fuel economy, and the load on driveline parts. A tire that technically fits under the truck is not always a tire that works well.
You also need to know how tire sizes are written. Off-road tires usually show up in one of two formats. The flotation size looks like 35x12.50R17. That means the tire is roughly 35 inches tall, 12.5 inches wide, and fits a 17-inch wheel. The metric size looks like 315/70R17. In that case, 315 is the width in millimeters, 70 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, and 17 is the wheel diameter.
Those numbers get you close, but they are not the whole story. Actual measured height and width vary by brand, tread design, and wheel width. One brand's 35 can measure closer to 34.5, while another runs true or even tall. That matters when clearance is tight.
Start With Your Current Setup
Before you shop, get under the vehicle and look at what you have now. Check your current tire size, wheel width, wheel offset or backspacing, suspension height, and the available room around the tire at ride height and full turn. If the truck already rubs a little with the current setup, going larger without changing anything is asking for trouble.
Wheel specs matter more than most people think. Two rigs with the same lift and same tire size can fit very differently if one wheel pushes the tire farther out. Match Tire Size to How the Vehicle Is Used
A weekend trail rig and a daily-driven overland truck do not need the same answer. Bigger tires add ground clearance under the diff, which is a real benefit. They also add weight and rotational mass. That can make the vehicle feel slower off the line, strain stock gears, and reduce braking performance.
If your vehicle sees highway miles every week, towing, or long road trips loaded down with gear, there is usually a sweet spot where you gain trail performance without making the rig miserable on pavement. For a lot of trucks and SUVs, that may be a 33 or 35 rather than jumping straight to 37s. If the build is aimed at harder trail use and you are ready for supporting mods, then stepping up makes more sense.
Be honest about your tolerance for compromises. Some owners are fine with trimming, re-gearing, a firmer ride, and lower fuel economy. Others want a clean fit, factory-like manners, and no drama. Neither is wrong. You just need to choose on purpose.
Lift Height Does Not Tell the Whole Story
People love asking what tire size fits with a 2-inch lift or a 3.5-inch lift. That question is too simple. Lift helps, but it does not solve everything because the tire still swings through the same arc when turning and stuffing into the fender.
A leveling kit may create enough room to clear a taller tire at ride height, but that same tire can still rub under compression. A suspension lift can improve clearance, but if the wheel offset is wrong, the tire may still contact the body or bumper. Some platforms can fit a larger tire with minor trimming and the right wheel. Others need body mount chops, high-clearance fenders, or changes to bump stops.
That is why the right answer is usually a package, not a single part. Tire size, wheel specs, lift, alignment, and trimming all work together.
Gearing, Power, and Driveline Stress
This is where a lot of builds go sideways. Bigger tires effectively raise your gearing. That means the engine has to work harder to move the same vehicle, especially from a stop or on hills. If your truck feels lazy after a tire upgrade, that is not your imagination.
On some rigs, a jump from a stock tire to a 33 is manageable with factory gears. Going to 35s may still be workable depending on engine, transmission, and axle ratio. Once you get into heavier 35s or 37s, re-gearing starts to become less of a luxury and more of a smart move if you want the vehicle to drive right again.

Wheel Width and Tire Width Need to Work Together
A lot of off-roaders focus on tire diameter and ignore width. Width affects flotation, steering feel, weight, and clearance. A wider tire can help in sand and loose terrain, but it can also hydroplane easier on wet roads and create more rubbing issues.
Wheel width changes how the tire sits and performs. Put a tire on a wheel that is too narrow or too wide and you can affect tread shape, sidewall support, and bead retention. For off-road use, many builders prefer a wheel width that gives the sidewall some shape rather than stretching the tire too flat. That can help protect the wheel and improve performance when aired down.
If you are chasing the biggest possible setup, remember this: sometimes a slightly narrower tire of the same height fits better, steers better, and works better off-road than the widest option on the shelf.
How to Check Clearance the Right Way
Do not judge fitment by a parked photo. A tire can look fine standing still and rub everywhere once the suspension compresses.
You want to check clearance at full steering lock, over bumps, and with suspension compression in mind. Pay attention to vertical clearance at the fender, rear clearance near the body mount or firewall, and inside clearance at the frame or control arms. If you plan to air down and flex the suspension on the trail, leave room for that too.
Mud terrain tires with aggressive shoulder lugs often need more room than all-terrains of the same advertised size. Again, brand and tread design matter.
A Practical Way to Choose Your Size
If you want a clean process, start with the largest tire size your platform commonly runs with your current or planned suspension. Then work backward from your real limits. Ask yourself how much trimming you are willing to do, whether re-gearing is on the table, how much road use the vehicle gets, and what wheel specs you plan to run.
From there, choose the size that gives you the performance bump you want without forcing a chain reaction of parts you did not budget for. A well-matched 33 or 35 on the right wheel often outperforms a poorly planned 37 with rubbing issues and stock gears.
